Inside the recess

A blind hangs inside the recess when it sits between the walls or window frames. The sides are usually out of sight. This is where made-to-measure really comes into its own.

Outside the recess

A blind hangs outside the recess when it hangs freely in front of the frame, wall or ceiling. Here the sides of the blind are usually visible.

Hanging your blinds between ceiling and windowsill? That counts as outside the recess too, but for the height you follow the inside-the-recess measuring instructions.
